Entwining Music, Dance, and Agriculture in Ilagan, Isabela

Away from the hustle and bustle of the metro, Kontra-GaPi had the great opportunity of re-visiting and performing in the Province of Isabela last January 27-28 thanks to the initiative of the Philippine Permaculture Association (PPA) and the Isabela Permaculture Development Center (IPDC).

Arriving in the early hours of the 27th at the Ale-Ale Permaculture Resource Center in Ilagan City, the group had the pleasure of touring the Kitchen Garden cultivated by the staff and volunteers of Ale-Ale. Here, Mr. Sixto Bereber of the PPA talked about the basics of permaculture, and the significance of sustainable and self-sufficient farming methods. Although this may not have anything to do about music or dance directly, it was still a very meaningful experience for Kontra-GaPi since environmental protection is one of the group’s primary advocacies.

In the afternoon, Kontra-GaPi held a demo performance right outside Ale-Ale. Despite the heat brought about by the noon sun, many people were moved by the music and dances, and remained to watch the entire show. Though most of the audiences’ faces were hidden behind their umbrellas, handkerchiefs, and makeshift shields against the sunshine, their applause and cheering made it clear that they enjoyed and appreciated Kontra-GaPi’s demonstration.
